1,114 The number of Prekindergarden-12th grade (PreK-12) students participating in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Healthcare (STEM-H) activities at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) rose significantly due largely to outreach efforts implemented by the SVHEC's newly-created Student Services and Partner Relations division. This division partnered with the Halifax County Public School System to provide PreK-12 students with an opportunity to participate in STEM-H activities at the SVHEC. We anticipate that enrollment in these activities will continue at the same level or higher in the next 12 months and have adjusted our target measure to reflect this trend. NOTE: We are unable to revise the Data Source and Calculation description to address the Commonwealth of Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts (APA) measure methodology concern, due to system restrictions only permitting the input of measure data and explanations. However, we are mindful that the methodology needs to be revised to better explain the measure’s calculation and the source data. Therefore, appropriate edits have been made in SVHEC’s 2012-2014 strategic plan. Note: this is an annual measure for the period 7/1/11through 6/30/12; data for fiscal year quarters is not available.
1,764 The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) has provided science, technology, engineering, math, and healthcare (STEM-H) enrichment opportunities to Prekindergarten-12th grade (PreK-12) students since the Center became a state agency in 2005. Many STEM opportunities were focused on summer offerings targeting Prekindergarten and elementary-age students. This changed in 2008 with the establishment of the Center’s signature program, the Business of Art & Design (BA&D), and in 2009 with the opening of the SVHEC’s Center of Nursing Excellence (CNE). Both broadened STEM-H opportunities for high school students. In 2010, the SVHEC opened the Research & Development Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Energy Efficiency (R&D CAMEE), an active partner in providing STEM-H experiences for high school students. PreK-12 students now engage in STEM-H activities year round at the SVHEC. The STEM-H enrichments the SVHEC affords these students through are designed to encourage early entry into career pathways in career fields projected to grow in the region. Note: this is an annual measure for the period 7/1/12 through 6/30/13; data for fiscal year quarters is not available.
3,070 In FY 2014, we expected results for this measure to fall approximately 11 percent due to anticipated programmatic changes but the addition of a full-time staff member in the newly-established Career and Academic Resource Services (CARS) office enabled the SVHEC to almost double results for this measure in FY2014. Note: this is an annual measure for the period 7/1/13 through 6/30/14; data for fiscal year quarters is not available.
5,891 In FY 2015 the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) reached more "Kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12)" students with outreach programs and activities in science, math, engineering, technology, and healthcare (STEM-H) than in previous years. These included the SOVA Youth Career Expo, STEM-H demonstrations for elementary and middle school students, and inclusion of K-12 students in community-based STEM-H-centered service projects sponsored by the SVHEC. Success is attributed to the addition of outreach staff and to the collaborative relationships SVHEC staff have built with education partners and community-based organizations in the region. Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
7,020 In FY 2016 the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) reached more kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) students with outreach programs and activities in science, math, engineering, technology, and healthcare (STEM-H). Activities included the SOVA Youth Career Expo, STEM-H demonstrations for elementary and middle school students, the SVHEC’s “Do It for Your Children” parent-student tutoring initiative, and inclusion of K-12 students in community-based STEM-H projects sponsored by the SVHEC. Success in FY 2016 is attributed to the addition of outreach staff and collaborative relationships the SVHEC staff has built with education and community-based organizations in the region, including participation in the "AmeriCorps - Dan River Year" project led by the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (Danville, VA). Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
6,199 In FY 2017 the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) reached almost 6,200 Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade (PreK-12) students through outreach programs, events, and activities focusing on science, math, engineering, technology, and healthcare (STEM-H). Activities included the SOVA Youth Career Expo attended by seventh and ninth graders from four counties and two cities; tours of SVHEC learning spaces and labs and STEM-H demonstrations for elementary and middles school students; the SVHEC’s “Do It for Your Children” parent-student tutoring initiative; and community-based STEM-H projects sponsored by the SVHEC, including the After-School Lego Club led by an AmeriCorps member at the local public library and made possible through the Center’s participation in the “AmeriCorps - Dan River Year" project led by the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (Danville, VA). While the FY 2017 result is down 12 percent year-to-date, the Center’s commitment to serving PreK-12 students and building the “pipeline” to higher education and workforce training is unwavering. The addition of outreach staff in the latter half of FY 2017 and expanded collaborative relationships with PreK-12 partners will likely bring an increase in numbers served in the next fiscal year. Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
6,102 In FY 2018 the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) reached 6,102 Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade (PreK-12) students through outreach programs, events, and activities focusing on science, math, engineering, technology, and healthcare (STEM-H). Activities included the SOVA Youth Career Expo; STEM-H demonstrations for elementary and middles school students; outreach services provided across the region by the SVHEC's Southern Virginia Area Health Education Center; and community-based STEM-H projects sponsored by the SVHEC, including the After-School Lego Club led by an AmeriCorps member at the local public library. The Lego Club was made possible through the Center’s participation in the “AmeriCorps - Dan River Year" project led by the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (Danville, VA). The FY 2018 result is down one and one-half percent but the Center’s commitment to serving PreK-12 students and building the “pipeline” to higher education and workforce training is unwavering. Expanded collaboration with PreK-12 partners, including those established through the Center’s Career Tech Academy will bring an increase in numbers served in the next fiscal year. Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
6,409 In FY 2019 the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) reached 6,409 Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade (PreK-12) students through outreach programs, events, and activities focusing on science, math, engineering, technology, and healthcare (STEM-H). Activities included the SOVA Youth Career Expo; tours of SVHEC learning spaces and labs and STEM-H demonstrations for elementary and middles school students; outreach services provided across the region by the SVHEC's Southern Virginia Area Health Education Center; and community-based STEM-H projects sponsored by the SVHEC, including the After-School Lego Club at the local public library and made possible through the Center’s participation in the “AmeriCorps - Dan River Year" project led by the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (Danville, VA). In FY 2019, the SVHEC launched the Career Tech Academy and included tours and open house activities for prospective students. The FY 2019 result is up five percent largely due to implementation of a new outreach strategy: the SVHEC, with support from the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation has two Global Career Facilitators engaging students around the region to identify education and career pathways. Serving PreK-12 students and building the “pipeline” to higher education and workforce training is one of the SVHEC's highest priorities. Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
4,948 In FY 2020 the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) reached 4,948 Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade (PreK-12) students through programs, workshops, events, and activities focusing on science, math, engineering, technology, and healthcare (STEM-H). Activities included presentations and enrollment fairs for the SVHEC's dual enrollment Career Tech Academy, open to high school juniors and seniors in four counties; the SOVA Youth Career ChoICE Expo; tours of SVHEC learning spaces and labs and STEM-H demonstrations; healthcare career outreach services provided across the region by the SVHEC's Southern Virginia Area Health Education Center; and community-based STEM-H projects sponsored by the SVHEC and led by its resident AmeriCorps members, whose service is made possible through SVHEC participation in the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research's “AmeriCorps - Dan River Year" project. The FY 2020 result is down twenty-three percent largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent closure of the SVHEC in March 2020. Tours, events, and workshops planned for spring 2020 were cancelled in compliance with the Governor's orders and in the interest of community safety. The SVHEC’s resumed serving PreK-12 students, as well as college and workforce students, in July under the Commonwealth's reopening plans. However, the short- and long-term measures target will be revised downward as several major outreach activities scheduled for fall 2020 and spring 2021 have already been cancelled. Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
3,260 In FY 2021, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) reached 3,260 Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade (PreK-12) students through programs, workshops, events, and activities focusing on science, math, engineering, technology, and healthcare (STEM-H). This number was down thirty-four percent, attributable to COVID restrictions that lasted well into spring 2021. Normal outreach activities including presentations and enrollment fairs for the SVHEC's dual enrollment Career Tech Academy, tours of SVHEC learning spaces, regional healthcare education career and outreach services provided by the SVHEC's Southern Virginia Area Health Education Center, and community-based STEM-H projects sponsored by the SVHEC were all curtailed during the COVID period and did not fully resume until FY 2022. Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
7,093 In FY 2022, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) reached 7,093 regional Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade (PreK-12) students through science, technology, engineering, math, and healthcare (STEM-H) outreach activities and events. This was nearly double the number of students reached during the previous fiscal year, due in large part to relaxing of COVID protocols and return to community gathering. SVHEC staff were able to return to delivering STEM-H education and career pathway information and programmed activities through face-to-face events including enrollment fairs for the SVHEC's dual enrollment Career Tech Academy, participation in the SOVA Youth Career ChoICE Expo attended by 5,000 seventh and ninth graders, and tours of SVHEC learning spaces and labs and STEM-H demonstrations. The SVHEC's Southern Virginia Area Health Education Center (AHEC) provided in-person healthcare career outreach services across the region. The SVHEC’s resident AmeriCorps members, whose service is made possible through the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research's “AmeriCorps - Dan River Year" project brought back several STEM-H activities for Pre-K-12 students. Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
9,752 In FY 2023, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) reached a record number of regional Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade (PreK-12) students through science, math, engineering, technology, and healthcare (STEM-H) outreach activities and events. This number is up thirty-seven percent from the previous year with robust engagement from four SVHEC divisions: the Office of Learner Success and Engagement, Career Tech Academy, the SVHEC's Southern Virginia Area Health Education Center (“AHEC”), and Workforce Training. These divisions offered outreach programming both onsite and in schools across the region. Outreach programming included education and career pathway information events, recruitment and enrollment, participation in the SOVA Youth Career ChoICE Expo attended by 5,000 seventh and ninth graders, and tours of SVHEC learning spaces and labs and STEM-H demonstrations. AHEC staff provided in-person healthcare career education and outreach services across its fourteen county, three city service region. Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
13,874 In FY 2024, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) and partners achieved a new record number of regional Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade (PreK-12) students reached through science, math, engineering, technology, and healthcare (STEM-H) outreach activities and events. This number is up due to growth of two major outreach events, SOVA Youth Career ChoICE East and SOVA Youth Career ChoICE West, and robust engagement from four SVHEC divisions: the Office of Learner Success and Engagement, Career Tech Academy, the SVHEC's Southern Virginia Area Health Education Center (“AHEC”), and Workforce Training. These divisions provided outreach programming both on the SVHEC campus and in schools across the region. Programming included education and career pathway information events, recruitment and enrollment, participation in the two Career ChoICE Expos, and tours of SVHEC learning labs with STEM-H demonstrations. AHEC staff provided in-person healthcare career education and outreach services across its fourteen county, three city service region. Note: This is an annual measure; data for fiscal quarters is not available.
