Data Source and Calculation
Number of Potomac Aquifer monitoring wells becoming more stable. DEQ identified six monitoring wells in the Potomac Aquifer from the DEQ-USGS Virginia Active Water Level Network that are representative of different coastal plain regions. The selected wells are located in: Westmoreland County (55P 5); James City County (56G 57 and 55H 20); Newport News (171-B); Sussex (179A), and Chesapeake (91F). These wells were selected because of the following criteria: 1) each has real-time monitoring, 2) each has at least 30 years of recorded water levels, 3) each represents different depths within the Potomac Aquifer, and 4) in total represents coverage of the entire coastal plain. Method: calculate the historical trend in median annual and minimum annual well depth to water surface and plot the slope of the trend line. Wells with a negative slope indicate increasing depth below land surface, and decreasing groundwater levels in the aquifer. Wells with a positive slope indicate decreasing depth below land surface and increasing groundwater levels in the aquifer.
