Currently, the only Virginia board-approved HSE examination in Virginia is the General Educational Development (GED) test, which was developed by the American Council on Education to enable persons who have not graduated from high school to demonstrate the attainment of abilities normally associated with completion of a high school program of study. A database tracks the number of HSE test takers that pass a HSE test and earn a certificate.

2013 reflects the last year in which test takers could take the 2002 GED series test.

2013 reflects the last year in which test takers could take the 2002 GED series test. The GED was revamped in 2014 in terms of content and delivery. Since it is a new test, the state expects a drop of passers as compared to 2013, but an upward trend in GED test takers that earns a GED certificate, from June 2014 to 2018. As of June, 2014 there are 531 GED test takers that earned a GED certificate.

Currently, the only Virginia board-approved HSE examination in Virginia is the General Educational Development (GED) test. The year 2015 reflects a little more than double the number of individuals who passed in 2014. This is a result of high quality professional development for HSE staff and teachers. Students are becoming more familiar and comfortable with the testing format on computer. In addition, the passing score for the GED test was dropped to 145 for each section of the test. Six hundred and forty seven students were added to the passers as a result of the score adjustment by GED Testing Service. Moreover, the number of students attempting to take the test continues to increase.
