Data Source and Calculation
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) maintains a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) inventory which tracks Virginia communities compliant with FEMA regulations. In communities that have adopted ordinances that are compliant with FEMA regulations, flood insurance is available through FEMA, rather than through private insurance companies. The Department of Conservation and Recreation continues to work with all potential participating communities to increase membership in this beneficial program.
