Data Source and Calculation
The number of acres permanently conserved from development within Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay watershed beginning January 1, 2010 will be tracked by DCR utilizing its conservation lands database. This measure will track progress on the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement land conservation goal, which states that by December 31, 2025, all five watershed states and the District of Columbia will protect an additional two million acres of land throughout the watershed (using a 2010 baseline). The Bay Agreement calculations for Virginia’s portion of the watershed would require conservation of an annual average of 45,928.85 acres per year (January 1, 2014- December 31, 2025) to achieve a total of 680,000 acres by December 31, 2025. (Virginia makes up 34% of the watershed’s land base. 0.34 x 2 million acre goal = 680,000 acres)

25,906.40 This number represents the total acres conserved within the first six months of the baseline (1/1/10 through 6/30/10).
21,645.43 This is the total number of acres conserved in FY2011 for a total of 47,551.83 acres conserved to date.
36,339.49 This is the total number of acres conserved in FY2012 for a total of 83,891.32 acres conserved to date.
24,659.24 This is the total number of acres conserved in FY2013 for a total of 108,550.56 acres conserved to date.
43,267.61 This is the total number of acres conserved in FY2014 for a total of 151,818.17 acres conserved to date.
22,254.02 This is the total number of acres conserved in FY2015 for a total of 174,072.19 acres conserved to date.
22,970.44 This is the total number of acres conserved in FY2016 for a total of 197,042.63 acres conserved to date.
25,597.52 This is the total number of acres conserved in FY2017 for a total of 222,640.15 acres conserved to date.
36,659.95 This is the number of additional acres conserved for a total of 259,300.10 acres conserved to date. A total of 34,821.32 new acres were permanently conserved in FY18, and an additional 1,838.63 previously unreported acres prior to FY!8. Corrections made in the Conservation Lands database in situations where locality source data were not previously mapped or are now better mapped allows for accurate calculation.
22,065.48 This is the total number of acres conserved in FY2019. Since the 2010 Chesapeake Bay Goal baseline, a total of 281,442.28 acres have been preserved. This total includes an un-reported 77.7 following a correction in the Conservation Lands database.
