Data Source and Calculation
The Virginia Defense Force (VDF) is an all-volunteer state reserve militia. Its mission is to assist the Virginia National Guard in performing state missions as specified by the Governor. The VDF is made up of over 400members; 300 active members and 100 members in the reserve.
The VDF is under the control of the Adjutant General. With units located throughout the state, at the direction DMA, the VDF can move into a stricken area quickly, interact with and assist local authorities and restore community integrity as soon as possible. Working during blizzards, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other disasters, the VDF volunteers are familiar faces working in nearby towns and cities bringing aid and comfort to their neighbors.
The members of the VDF provide various forms of volunteer community service throughout the Commonwealth in support of the DMA. This measure would be calculated by taking the number of volunteer "manhours" performed by the VDF and multiplied by the average labor rate ($24.64). The total number reported will represent the cost-saving benefit to the Commonwealth.
